The series is set in the 13th century during the Goryeo dynasty. At that time, real power belonged to the military dictator Choe Chung-heon, while King Gojong remained only a nominal ruler. The story follows Kim Jun, a man born into a low social class who rises through battles, hardships, and political struggles to become one of the most powerful military leaders in Goryeo.
