A strict teacher rethinks his life before forced retirement.
The film tells the story of Andrew Crocker-Harris, a classical language teacher at an old school in England. He is known for being cold, demanding, and emotionally withdrawn. He is forced to retire due to his failing health. During this time, he reexamines his complicated relationships with his students, colleagues, and wife. The teacher, who has been underappreciated throughout his life, gradually begins to realize the true value of human love and respect. The film depicts loneliness, honor, regret, and the belated changes in the human heart in a deeply dramatic spirit. Albert Finney's performance is one of the film's strongest points.
