A wooden puppet seeks a magical golden key while escaping an evil puppeteer.
The film tells the story of a cheerful wooden puppet named Buratino. He is created by a poor craftsman named Papa Carlo. Buratino is very cheerful and curious, and he gets into various adventures. He runs away from the evil puppet theater owner Karabas-Barabas and makes various friends along the way. The most important event is the discovery of a mysterious golden key, which opens the door to a new happy life. The film is enriched with a fairy-tale atmosphere, music and funny scenes. The work encourages children to honesty, friendship and courage and is considered one of the brightest examples of classic Soviet cinema.
