A kind-hearted doctor and his three sons face family and life challenges together.
Pyotr Bondarenko is the head of a maternity hospital and the father of three sons. Because of his kindness, selflessness and strict moral principles, people have nicknamed him Don Quixote. He tries to raise his sons according to the same values. His eldest son Viktor is an artist going through a creative crisis, while his middle son Dmitry has graduated from a teachers' college and is trying to determine his future and personal life. The youngest son Yuri dreams of going to Africa to fight against colonialism. Meanwhile, a serious situation develops at Bondarenko's maternity hospital when a woman refuses to take her newborn child. The family faces various personal and social difficulties, combining moments of drama with lighthearted comedy. The film explores family relationships, compassion, responsibility and the importance of remaining true to one's principles.
