Three days at a Moscow school make teachers and students reconsider love, happiness and life.
The film follows three days in the life of an ordinary Moscow school. History teacher Ilya Melnikov is respected by his students for his honesty, strict principles and demanding nature, yet behind his confident exterior he struggles with loneliness and dissatisfaction with his own life. A young English teacher, Natalya Gorelova, joins the school where she was once a student herself. She finds it difficult to gain the trust of her pupils, who respond to her arrival with resistance. At the same time, the teachers have their own complicated relationships, feelings and unresolved personal problems. When the students are asked to write an essay answering the question “What is happiness?”, their very different responses reveal how differently young people and adults understand life. Over the course of several school days, the characters are forced to reconsider their ideas about love, responsibility, honesty, education and happiness.
