Set during the Civil War, Newton Knight, a poor farmer from Mississippi, survives the Battle of Corinth and deserts the Confederate Army. Rallying other small farmers and escaped slaves, Knight launches an armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County. He leads them to establish a unique "Free State of Jones," a safe haven where everyone is treated equally. The story follows his defiant journey of rebellion and his lifelong struggle for racial equality and justice.
