A man wrongly jailed forms a bond and risks everything to escape a brutal prison.

The film is about a criminal named Henri Charrier, who is falsely accused of murder and sent to a terrible prison colony in French Guiana. The hero, nicknamed "Butterfly", tries to escape several times in order to achieve freedom. Along the way, he befriends the swindler Louis Degas. Degas helps him with money, and Papillon protects him. Despite the harsh conditions of prison, torture and loneliness, he does not give up. The film shows in a dramatic and realistic way the human desire for freedom, the power of patience and friendship.
