A father struggles to accept his daughter's choice of marriage in modern Japan.

The film depicts the conflict between tradition and modernity in post-war Japan. Wataru Hirayama considers himself a modern man, but when his daughter Setsuko tells him that she wants to marry a man of her own choosing, he objects. His daughter's independent decision tests her father's views and family relationships. At the same time, similar problems are observed in the families of Hirayama's friends. The film delicately and sincerely explores the gap between generations, the relationship between parents and children, and changes in society. This work is considered one of the most important family dramas in the work of director Ozu.
