An exiled filmmaker secretly reunites with her mother in Taiwan.
Yang Shu, a Chinese filmmaker living in exile in Hong Kong, travels to Taiwan with her husband and son to attend a film festival. She has been separated from her mother, who remains in mainland China, for several years. When her mother needs another serious operation, she travels to Taiwan with a guided tour in the hope of seeing her daughter and grandson. Because of the political circumstances surrounding Yang Shu and her family, the reunion cannot happen openly. Instead, they secretly meet at tourist attractions and restaurants while pretending not to be related. Their family trip becomes an intimate story about separation, identity, belonging and the emotional cost of political pressure. The film combines a quiet family drama with a portrait of people trying to remain connected despite circumstances that keep forcing them apart.
