A pirate falls genuinely in love and battles a corrupt governor for his beloved.

Pedro Valverde, a pirate from Tortuga, has discovered a less dangerous way to make money than bloody raids. Posing as a Spanish nobleman, he courts wealthy women, becomes engaged to them and disappears with their valuable dowries before the weddings. His scheme changes when he meets Soledad, a noble Spanish woman who has arrived in Santa Cruz to claim a large inheritance. Pedro genuinely falls in love with her, but the governor, Alfonso de Montelimar, also has his eyes on Soledad and her fortune. After discovering Pedro’s true identity as a pirate and swindler, Alfonso exposes him and tries to turn Soledad against him. Pedro must prove that his feelings are sincere while uncovering the governor’s plans.
