“The King’s Game” is a 2021 psychological drama film based on Stefan Zweig’s “The Chess Novel.” The film is set in Austria during World War II. Lawyer Josef Bartok is arrested by the Nazis and held in solitary confinement. The mentally challenged hero tries to keep his sanity with the help of a chess book he accidentally finds. Playing against himself, he plunges deep into the world of chess and gradually suffers from mental anguish. Later, a chess game on a ship resurfaces his inner fears and traumas. The film powerfully explores the themes of the human psyche, loneliness, and the struggle for survival.
