A female assassin struggles between duty and forbidden love.

Nie Yinniang was separated from his family as a child and raised by a nun as a highly skilled assassin. He is sent on special missions to eliminate political enemies. One day, he is tasked with killing his ex-lover and relative Tian Ji’an. But Yinniang is torn between following his mentor’s orders or following his human emotions. The film depicts China during the Tang Dynasty through a very quiet, visual beauty and minimal dialogue. Each scene is filled with symbolism and reflects the protagonist’s inner struggle. The work explores themes of loyalty, duty, love, and freedom in a deeply philosophical manner.
