Shōgun is a historical drama series about political struggle, honor, and survival in feudal Japan.

Historically, in Japan's clan-based society, supreme power belonged to a single clan (the imperial clan), but to retain actual power, the imperial clan (family) was forced to ally with another major clan. Thus, alongside the emperors, there was always another clan. Until 456, this clan was the Katsuragi clan, until 498 it was the Heguri clan, until 539 it was the Otomo clan, then the Mononobe clan, and in the second half of the century, the Soga clan. In 645, the Fujiwara clan seized power.
