A refugee and a businessman cross paths and help each other survive in Finland.
“The Other Side of Hope” is a social drama-comedy film directed by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. The story revolves around Khaled, a Syrian refugee who fled Aleppo. He arrives in Helsinki and asks for asylum, but is rejected by the official system. At the same time, former merchant Vikström decides to change his life, open a small restaurant, and helps Khaled. The film illuminates the issues of humanity, empathy, and migration through the intersection of two different destinies. Kaurismäki’s characteristic minimal dialogue, cool colors, and quiet humor give the film its own unique style. The film was highly praised at European festival film festivals and depicts social issues in a gentle but profound way.
