A young mage investigates a mystery to stop an ancient evil.

Since childhood, Qingming, a disciple of the yin-yang master, could never master the protective spell. Years later, because of this, his teacher receives a fatal dose of poison during a battle with the Shadow of the Fierce Serpent. Before dying, he orders Qingming to travel to the Imperial City, where the Serpent has been imprisoned for centuries. Upon arrival, Qingming clashes with a young master named Boya, but they soon must put aside their differences and investigate the death of another sorcerer together. Suspicion falls on the masters gathered for the heavenly ceremony, who are meant to awaken four guardians protecting the Fierce Serpent from awakening.
