Maki and baby giraffe Zarafa embark on a perilous journey toward freedom, showing courage and friendship.
Zarafa is a French‑Belgian animated adventure directed by Rémi Bezançon and Jean‑Christophe Lie. Set in the early 19th century, the film frames its narrative as an old man’s story to his grandchildren. Young Maki escapes from slave traders and befriends an orphaned baby giraffe named Zarafa. Alongside a nomad named Hassan, they embark on a perilous journey across Africa and the Mediterranean toward Paris. Inspired by the true account of the first giraffe brought to France as a royal gift, the film blends friendship, adventure, and a dream of freedom across sweeping landscapes and cultures. Zarafa celebrates courage, loyalty, and the bond between boy and animal.
